Two Tits and a Vote is an opportunity for women to leverage their political power, lobby for change across critical issues in Ireland, and make sure our voices are heard.
Women remain severely under-represented in Irish politics, with only 12% of TDs in the Dial. On the plus side, the queue for the women’s loo at the Oireachtas must be very short indeed. On the minus side, women’s issues are not getting the attention or the funding required to serve the needs of 50.3% of the Irish population.
Two Tits and a Vote is intended to make it easy for women to take action and instigate change using the power we do have: our influence as voters, and our strength in numbers. By organising women around specific issues and providing a template for achievable action, we can make an impact with politicians.
Two Tits and a Vote is an ongoing grassroots campaign. Given the profound demands on women’s time in the modern age, Two Tits and a Vote campaigns are focused on “armchair activism” - political actions that can take place from home, school or work (rather than a picket line) in a short amount of time. The internet is a natural channel for these actions, so Two Tits and a Vote is designed to use the internet to deliver real-world campaigning in the form of paper postcards, letters and petitions.
Two Tits and a Vote was created by Sabrina Dent, a woman with no particular political or campaigning qualifications but considerable experience in internet communications, in January of 2008. Goals for 2008 include:
- The formation of an advisory board to select and steer future campaigns;
- Formation of a not-for-profit organisation;
- Formalisation of appropriate alliances and partnerships;
- Selection of a Board of Directors;
- Nomination and election of local, on the ground volunteer coordinators.
